Plant your Flowers!

Wait until the temperature is around 50-55 degrees before planting. Arrange your plants in a pattern, space them out and place each plant into the individual holes you prepared.

Use your hands to fill in the empty space around each flower and cover the top of the root ball, the stem of the flowers should never be covered by the dirt. Knowing when to plant helps them off to a good start. The ideal time to plant is on a cloudy day or in the evenings to help protect the newly planted flowers from sun stress while settling into their new home.

Read the tags carefully, some flowers prefer roots to be shallower than others. Do your flowers prefer sun, shade or a combination of both? Full sun is usually six hours or more of direct sun per day, not necessarily continuous. Partial sun or partial shade is four to six hours of sun per day, with partial sun closer to six, partial shade closer to four.

Start with good soil because most flowers do best in garden soil that is loose and well drained with a lot of organic material as part of the soil compositions. You don’t need to dig a large area to plant flowers a depth of approximately 6 inches is generally good. Avoid digging or handling soil when it’s wet to prevent compaction. Plants need a certain amount of space between soil particles for roots to grow.

Always water your plants after planting. Generally, garden flowers need 1 to 2 inches of moisture every week. It’s best to water deeply and less frequently. Potted flowers need more water because they have less soil around them to hold the moisture.

As your flowers grow, groom them by pulling off any brown foliage or by removing old leaves for a cleaner look. Clipping off the flower heads of certain plants help encourage them to bloom again.

If you are planting seeds, follow the directions on the seed packet to know how deep to plant each seed and how far apart.
